Other Rehabilitation and Inclusion Programs

Starting in 2019, Unamonos diversified its services to respond to the needs of special education as well as those of inclusive education. Laws and measures in favor of inclusion in our country tend to allow children with mild or moderate disabilities to be integrated into regular educational systems, while those with severe disabilities attend special centers such as our School.

This meant that in addition to the children and families that we have been serving at “Escuela Unámonos”, our services extend to other actors committed to the care and social integration of people with disabilities in more open environments such as schools, universities, sports clubs; and also to companies, institutions and the general public.

Early Intervention Program

Aimed at mothers and families who have a baby between 0 and 3 years old, with a medical diagnosis of intellectual disability. Currently, we care for babies with Down syndrome, brain injury, cerebral palsy, and hydrocephalus.

In this Program, babies receive early stimulation, orofacial therapy; while their families receive orientation and permanent training to act at home.

The Program achieves that the babies have the best possible initial development before their inclusion in a regular Nest or beginning of school; and that their mothers, fathers or relatives act appropriately with them at all times, favoring their integral development.

Directs the Program: Teresa Linares Morante.

“Jaime Rey de Castro” Work Insertion Program with Support

This Program is named after our benefactor. In it, young people with mild or moderate intellectual disabili ties, from the age of 18, who have or have not been to the Unamonos School, are prepared to join the city’s work centers. According to the laws, public and private companies must hire people with disabilities. Usually, it is preferred to include workers with sensory or motor disabilities, so we have greater challenges in the inclusion of young people with cognitive limitations.

In the JRC Program, the natural abilities and talents of each young person are discovered and reinforced while contacting companies and institutions that require these job profiles. Since 2010, Unamonos has achieved the inclusion and support of 28 young people with special abilities in various work centers in Arequipa.

Directs the Program: Úrsula Najarro Quiroz.

Protected Workshops “1en1000”

Some young people with mild or moderate intellectual disabilities, over 18 years of age, have developed great skills for weaving and carpentry. Although they have not been integrated into work centers in the city, they do have a technical deployment according to their talents, in our sheltered work, workshops run by two Heads of Workshop and an
assistant.

Unamonos has created the brand 1EN1000 © (“one in a thousand”), to place in the national and international market, the products made by these young people and thus, remunerate their work.

Our purpose is to spread the ability that special people have to work in disciplined processes and achieve high quality products.

Directs the Program: Adelaida Cornejo Quiroz.

Counseling Programs for Inclusion “IN”

These programs are twofold: Through IN ESCOLAR we advise regular private schools that have students with special educational needs. Currently, we support three private schools in Arequipa with this
service.

Advice to schools is continuous. Children enrolled in regular schools (mainly with Down syndrome and autism) require a multidisciplinary care team. Regular teachers need additional preparation and training; Furthermore, each case of inclusion is unique and the orientation of the family and the entire community is vital for the success of integration.

Through IN LABORAL, Unamonos advises companies and institutions that have workers with disabilities.

It is important to note that the success of labor inclusion lies not only in the placement of the person in a workplace, rather, in their support in the place. For this, a constant and close accompaniment is needed to each one and their environment at work, also training other workers, bosses and the work community in general. Thus, Unamonos visits the 28 young people included from the JRC Program and attends, as soon as requested, to a specific need around them within their companies.

This center is aimed at all families, not just those with a child with a disability, of any economic condition. Currently, we provide psychological and pedagogical care; speech therapy and occupational therapy.
